No doubt you’ve heard all of the astrologers and astromages shouting from the internet rooftops about how Jupiter, the planetary equivalent of a wise Sage who is also Santa Claus (does it get any better?), has entered his own sign of Sagittarius. Staying true to the Greater Benefic’s generous spirit, his opening debut was November 8th 2018, which also happens to be a northern hemisphere Thursday, the day which Jupiter rules.

This provides a too-good-to-pass-up opportunity to establish (or clean and re-energize) Jupiter altars and make offerings to the planet of #BigDickEnergy, in order to activate his influence in our own personal sphere, as well as the collective. This could be a one-time thing or it could be the basis for a weekly offering practice, to keep those sweet Jup-Juices flowing.

For any who don’t know, Jupiter is the planetary go-to for greasing the wheels of… almost anything. He is associated with wealth, generosity, and material gain, but also wisdom, perspective, and power. Well appeased and in an empowered position, he can provide aid to whatever he’s touching in your chart — the house he is in, the houses and planets he rules, the planets he aspects — and all else in your world. At best, Jupiter’s influence is steadying and grants a broader, more balanced perspective. Devotions to him will help you establish and maintain sovereignty, in addition to ingratiating yourself to the other Kings, Queens, and powers that be.

If you are building something (as everyone who aspires to a happy, healthy, and prosperous life ultimately is!), Jupiter is an influence you want on your side. That said, let’s get into the nitty gritty of Jupiter devotions…

The Faces of Jupiter + Timing

Jupiter is one of the oldest Gods, worshipped in many forms and by many faces. Cognate figures include Jove, Zeus, Indra, Thor, etc.. All of these figures are nigh limitless founts of prolific masculine potency, being Gods of the sky, thunder, and lightning, in charge of the other Gods in their pantheon and all else below.

For Jupiter devotions, you can select any God facet you favor, or just appeal to the spirit of the planet itself. Please note that if you are approaching the Jupitarian current through a specific Godform, such as Indra or Chango, you should use the traditional prayers, altar, and offering suggestions from their origin traditions.

For best efficacy, Jupiter offerings and prayers should be made on Thursdays or Sundays after Sunset (his planetary night), during his hour.

Planetary hours change based on location and time of year, and can be calculated online or through a number of apps, such as Time Nomad, which is free for iPhone.

You can also perform extra Jupiter devotions when other planets or the Moon conjoin Jupiter, or when transiting Jupiter aspects planets in your own chart that you would like to provide greater aid to.

This Thursday (or one subsequent), if you already have a Jupiter altar, clean it. If you don’t have one, soon is the time to do it, to kickstart your Jupiter in Sagittarius experience!

Jupiter altars can act as or be incorporated with other pre-existing prosperity and money altars, and depending on the structure of your intent, be shared with other compatible deities like Ganesha, or stellar forces such as Regulus.

An example Jupiter altar could range from bare bones to excessively ornate, and include any or all of the following —

  • A royal blue or yellow altar cloth (paper in a pinch!)
  • One or four (the number of Jupiter) white, royal blue, or yellow candles
  • Piece of tin or gold, or something made of those metals.
  • The glyph/ symbol of Jupiter
  • The planetary square of Jupiter
  • Seals, symbols, and names of Jupiter
  • A statue of your chosen Jupitarian Godform
  • Fulgurite (crystals formed by lightning strikes), lapis lazuli, amethyst, blue topaz, sapphire, or yellow citrine
  • Jupitarian incense or Frankincense resin
  • A treasure box or place to put cash, checks, and coins
  • Lightning struck wood or images of lightning
  • Jupiter oils, powders, and talismans, or those for prosperity and power (coming soon!).
  • The Wheel of Fortune and/ or Hierophant tarot cards
  • A deep blue or yellow pen that you use for writing Jupiter related sigils or spells
  • A space for offerings. Jupiter likes fine and golden spirits, such as spiced rum or cognac, along with wine. Roman offerings often included fresh fruit and pastry.

The Agrippan symbols, planetary square, and hebrew table for Jupiter are all at the bottom of this post. You don’t have to use them all or even understand them, they’ll work regardless. You can draw them by hand or print the image from the file available to download below.

Keep in mind that sometimes ritual advice can be a little extra. You don’t HAVE to pull out all the stops. Basic workings are also effective, but often your return is in proportion to the effort you put in. That fact is as true in magic as it is everything else. Applying yourself will always render better results, and the effort expounded on a planet’s behalf becomes an aspect of your offering to it.

Preparation and Opening

Jupiter likes an affect that is humble and priestly, or gregarious, generous, and over the top — pick your poison!

Be freshly washed and wear white, yellow, or royal blue clothing, especially for the first devotion you perform or for subsequent important Jupitarian rites. You can also wear priestly garb or a mage’s robe.

Light your candles and incense. Anoint yourself with any Jupiter oils or sprays (coming soon!). Take a moment to visualize the planet Jupiter and channel his energy into your body and the altar itself. Meditate on the symbols or draw them fresh.

Once you feel attuned, say the Orphic Hymn to Zeus/ Jove, the call from the Picatrix, or an invocation and prayer of your own design. The Hymn follows, addressing Jupiter directly. If you would prefer to sub “Jupiter” for “Jove”, that is fine —

O Jove much-honor’d, Jove supremely great, to thee our holy rites we consecrate,
Our pray’rs and expiations, king divine, for all things round thy head exalted shine.
The earth is thine, and mountains swelling high, the sea profound, and all within the sky.
Saturnian king, descending from above, magnanimous, commanding, sceptred Jove;
All-parent, principle and end of all, whose pow’r almighty, shakes this earthly ball;
Ev’n Nature trembles at thy mighty nod, loud-sounding, arm’d with light’ning, thund’ring God.
Source of abundance, purifying king, O various-form’d from whom all natures spring;
Propitious hear my pray’r, give blameless health, with peace divine, and necessary wealth!

Afterward, present your offerings and thank Jupiter for what blessings he has already given you, and ask that he continue to provide them. This is an original prayer addressing each of the twelve house topics, because why not cover all our bases?

These can be modified per your own goals and circumstances —

Wise, all powerful Jove! Ruling the skies and all below, rumbling the earth with your mighty thunder and incredible lightning! I present to you these offerings, of (incense, flame, light, golden rum, etc.). Please accept them, and have them take the form that most please you!

Thank you for the blessings and wisdom you have provided, and I pray for your continued beneficent support in all things, in all ways…

Make me sovereign, in your image.

See that my bank, savings, and investment accounts grow positively, becoming fatter and fuller, as you command all resources.

Open my eyes to the opportunities I encounter for success and gain on a daily basis, with all the clarity and perspective of your broad survey.

Protect my residence, belongings, and loved ones from any and all harm, as the supreme all-powerful provider. See that my home is filled with the blessed and good, and these are all that pass my doorstep.

Make me inspired and prolific, as you are. 

Imbue me with habits to support my good health and ward away disease, for your vitality and strength are unrivaled.

Place me in right and close relationship with excellent partners, as husband of all.

Grant me access to vast resources through alliance, as you hold sway over every King and Queen of this world. 

Make me wise, learned, and generous of spirit, which is your way. See that I learn from the wisest of teachers and most accomplished of priests, as these are your earthly retinue.

Help me find and hold my rightful place, and be seen in the best light for all I do and who I am, for you are the allocator of promotions and determiner of great reputations.

Include me in the noblest of courts, and see that I am well received by the social networks and organizations of which I am part, as you care for societal order.

Guide me away from dark thoughts and idleness, toward gainful, nurturing and productive practices, for the boons of your works are limitless, and I am a faithful devotee of your ways.

As so many are already aware, today marked the midpoint in Venus’ retrograde cycle, as she basks in the heart of the Scorpio Sun. She is as deep in the underworld and as close to earth as she can possibly get, and now begins making her ascent to rise as the morning star, and ultimately, go direct in Libra, near the fixed star Spica.

As Austin wrote of so beautifully in his Scorpio season piece, the stories of Inanna and Ereshkigal are very much at play in this cycle. The Light sister, Queen of Heaven, and the Dark sister, Queen of the Underworld, are often positioned at odds with one another, when in our lived realities all women have the experience of both, and are unfairly cast in the eyes of society as one or the other.

Every woman is at times Inanna — the shiny, the desired, the powerful and triumphant.

And every woman is at times Ereshkigal — the muddied by scandal or blighted by traumatic experience, the derided, the powerless and trompled over.

Inanna critiques her dark counterpart: Maybe if you weren’t so consumed by negativity, people would like you more!

Ereshkigal seethes: Maybe if everything didn’t come so easily to you, you would understand how hard it is to suffer, and the heart wrenching pain of loneliness!

Though their points individually aren’t wrong, and could even be constructive, that’s not the intention. They’re used to wound, and to elevate or demean the other’s position in order to reinforce their own way, their own role in the story.

In which, their struggle is finally resolved through a show of compassion.

Pain — in order to heal — must be acknowledged.

Ereshkigal must be given a safe space where her pain is understood, and be allowed full ownership of the place she currently resides, which is the deepest and darkest in all the world, without judgment or condemnation. She deserves love, and isn’t given it freely or often.

Wash her with it.

Inanna must be allowed to shine, free of the resentment of others who curse her shoes, on the basis that they’re not wearing them. She shouldn’t have to make herself smaller so other people feel big. She deserves not to be shot down out jealousy or sensations of inferiority.

Exalt with her, not against her.

These dynamics have played out in my relationships with my literal sister and even mother, and relationships with many women. It’s something that affects all of us, because of the way our society is structured, and how we’re conditioned to compete with one another.

These themes have been coming up acutely in the last few months as I’ve gained more spotlight. Some people have me pegged as Inanna, and others, in a horribly traumatic and devastating way (that only those closest are privy to), have cast me as Ereshkigal.

I want to say — thank you to those who have cast me as a PERSON. With flaws and strengths and moments of personal triumph and devastation, and allowed me those without gunning for me, or withdrawing their love and support.

Because we’re all just trying our best.

We want happiness, health, and success for the ones we love, and we’ve been tempered by the sensation of scarcity, fear, and competitiveness of our times. It can be very hard to break out of that, but I’m trying every day to become less judgmental of others, and find constructive ways of contributing to the elevation of us all, as individuals, as women, as a community, as business owners, as what have you.

The way onward and upward is the restoration of our humanity. Archetypes can be helpful for understanding dynamics, but we can’t let ourselves or society shoehorn us into such roles for narrative convenience.

We should strive toward chunking up, sharing common ground for the greater good, and not fracturing ourselves and our communities.

None of us are Inanna, and none of us are Ereshkigal.

We are whole women, making our way through our own stories.

We are whole people, who deserve love and understanding, who shouldn’t have to avoid or self-sabotage our own success, just so others don’t feel small — or wish and try to make us fall.

And as often as it happens on the outside, it happens on the inside, so much more…

Inner-Innana reacts: Why is everyone so into that girl? She’s not that great, and certainly not better than me. I deserve more recognition!

Inner-Ereshkigal questions: You REALLY think you’re deserving of unconditional love and personal success? You’re right where you belong, and don’t even think of trying to improve yourself or your surroundings, because good things aren’t meant for ugly, dirty people like you.

All of this is a meandering way of asking, please —

Set yourself free from the ping pong of light and dark sisterhood, within and without.

Set other women free from suffering the unfair treatment of the archetypes they resemble, however those happen to be manifesting in the moment.

We don’t know the struggles of others, and shouldn’t contribute to them without just cause. Life is hard enough as it is.

Be kind.

For what kind of world would it be if the only shiny thing was our one Sun (as much as it would love that!), and there weren’t millions of others out there to gaze upon, and find meaning in?

We all deserve to be celebrated and admired for our unique gifts, our own brilliant light.

And I for one, would love to shine together ☀️☀️

Most people with an interest in witchcraft or magic will already be familiar with the concept of “glamour”. For those who are not, Wikipedia’s description is, to me, very spot on:

Glamour is the impression of attraction or fascination that a particularly luxurious or elegant appearance creates, an impression which intensifies reality. Typically, a person, event, location, technology, or product such as a piece of clothing can be glamorous or add glamour. “Glamour” originally referred to a magic spell, an illusion said to be cast by witches.

Virginia Postrel says that for glamour to be successful it nearly always requires sprezzatura—an appearance of effortlessness, and to appear distant—transcending the everyday, to be slightly mysterious and somewhat idealised, but not to the extent it is no longer possible to identify with the person. Glamorous things are neither opaque, hiding all, nor transparent showing everything, but translucent, favourably showing things.

The early Hollywood star system in particular specialised in Hollywood glamour where they systematically glamorised their actors and actresses.

Glamour can be confused with a style, which is adherence to a particular school of fashion, or intrinsic beauty; whereas glamour can be external and deliberate.

Glamour is derived from the successful effort one puts in to be seen in their best light, which has a “charming” effect on those who perceive and interact with them. The person need not be “beautiful” in a classical sense or their raw form, but they must play to their strengths, both aesthetically and socially.

This form of magic is obviously Venusian, the planet that takes rulership over beauty, desire, loveliness, and connection. The signs in which Venus holds dignity or debility can grant us more insight into the mechanics of glamour.

Dignified signs —

  • Taurus (rulership), earth of Venus. The body as the physical vessel, and its many potential adornments — jewelry, clothing, nail polish, makeup, a watch, a push up bra, etc.
  • Libra (rulership), air of Venus. Flirtation and the establishment of rapport. Fun banter and witty repartee. An enjoyable and harmonizing presence, who inspires a desire for closeness, but remains elusive.
  • Pisces (exaltation), water of Venus. Meta-affection. The ability to overcome divisions and connect, emotionally or sexually, but transcending those wavelengths of relationship. The ability to enjoy oneself and their company, deeply and truly. The projection of desire and wish fulfillment.

Debilitated signs —

  • Aries (detriment). Lust inspired by sexually exciting displays and raw charisma. Social competition and “alpha” dynamics.
  • Virgo (fall). Understanding one’s flaws in order to improve upon them. An air of vulnerability.
  • Scorpio (detriment). Understanding the desires and emotional needs of others. The dynamics of envy and intrigue.

Love or disdain them, the entire Kardashian movement — the largest female-led pop cultural empire in the world today, whose family economy alone rivals that of small nations  — is built on glamour magic.

Anyone who has seen them in their organic state understands that their appeal doesn’t come from being the most gorgeous creatures to grace a pair of stilettos.

It comes from the fact that they’re using every tool in their arsenal to improve upon what they’ve been given, and it is a fascinating performance to behold. It’s why their primary demographic isn’t men, despite their sexualized aesthetic, but the young women and girls who pay them for makeup and lifestyle advice.

Drag queens are also masters of glamour. Their undisputed leader, RuPaul, has a masterful understanding of this dynamic, and most women, even modern day actresses and models, fail to command the same level of fascination that a well-done Queen will when she enters a room.

When we talk about glamour “magic”, it’s easy to think that the effect is the result of ritualized spell-casting. In my experience, you don’t need to do any formal magical work to “cast” a glamour at all — the spell is cast as a natural result of Appearance and one’s Presence, and the cultivation that went into both, i.e. being glamorous. Wearing the armor of Venus, one becomes naturally endowed with her many charms.

Case in point: Marilyn Monroe, 20th level glamour master, likely never did a magical spell to that effect.

That being said, my entire model is built upon fusing the mundane and the magical, and cross-pollinating wherever possible. At the highest levels, magic isn’t something you do, it’s something you are.

Supportive ritual work can certainly help you cast a wider, more powerful glamour, but the most accessible gains will likely be a byproduct of social cultivation and bodily presentation. To the degree this is effective will rely on the gravitational power of one’s personal force and charisma, which magical acts and talismans can certainly help cultivate.

Skin in Glamour

Outside of appearing as a whole package — which is important, if one were to ask what the single most important physical feature of glamour is, my answer would be skin, which is the reason I create magically infused offerings for the enhancement of physical beauty.

For general glamour-inducing purposes, you want your skin to look as flawless as possible. It’s the easiest way to elevate your physical appearance to a level usually reserved for TV and other forms of media.

It’s one thing to look good in an Instagram picture in the age of ubiquitous filters and Photoshop and all the rest — lots of people look flawless online. The point is to come as close as you can to that, in real life.

You hear this commented on over and over again when people describe being starstruck by celebrities — “You think Beyonce is beautiful until you see her in real life, and then you realize she’s not a person, she’s a goddess! She is perfect in person!” and inevitably “her skin is flawless! She just has this glow!”

Now, we know that Beyonce didn’t actually wake up like that. We know that a glam-squad of 10 people helped her achieve an Image of perfection over the course of hours before each single appearance, and that before that she had a laser facial and fillers, and that she has spent a lifetime cultivating glamour-inducing characteristics and methods of presentation.

The point is — putting effort into your own can grant significant glamour gains, because we’re not sharing space with ghost-Marilyn or Beyonce or RuPaul or Kim Kardashian. Most of us, most of the time, are sharing space with “normal” people, who do not have active, intentional glamours engaged. It’s not hard to be the most glamour-inducing person in a room under those circumstances, should you aim to be it.

The other reason I say skin is the most important physical feature for generalized glamour enhancement, is that it’s the canvas upon which all other features are placed, and because it’s more equal opportunity than any other. Not everyone wears makeup or jewelry or has hair to style. Everyone can work towards better skin, and skin is a sensual organ.

Soft, smooth, lovely skin draws us in, because it would be nice for us, as viewers, to touch or even to kiss. It’s an organic draw not unlike our instinct to stroke soft animals, or snuggle soft fabrics. Nice skin is pleasant sensory input, visually, with the potential for even higher dividends should a physical connection result — and if we’re being honest, a large portion of glamour magic is drawn from the libidinal instinct of others, which, in turn, feeds personal magnetism.

Flawless Skin Hacks

People tell me all the time at conferences and events how flawless my skin is.

It isn’t.

BUT, I’ve found numerous hacks that improve my skin’s appearance, generally if you keep up with them, or momentarily before events with a week or so of focused preparation.

The answer isn’t JUST wearing well-applied foundation and concealer.

If you don’t go out of your way to improve your skin’s texture before putting makeup on, it won’t lay well on the skin and the effect won’t appear natural or other-worldly, which is the goal. Being able to TELL the result is from makeup is a distraction, and ultimately takes away from creating a glamorous impression.

Ongoing Skincare Routine

Finding the right products for regular use, that keep breakup flares down and don’t result in over drying or over moisturizing, is important for basic skin maintenance. I don’t personally think highly of most of the pharmacy labels like Neutrogena that rely on harsh chemicals and the cheapest ingredients, but to each their own.

Radiant Skin Vitamin Cocktail

I came across this recipe on xoJane years ago and have never stopped relying on it, because it makes such an obvious difference within a week of beginning supplementation. Daily —

I don’t know why it works so well, but for me — it’s magic.

Dietary Shifts

Carbohydrates, sugar, and alcohol have a detrimental impact on the appearance of skin, resulting in a puffier, duller complexion.

If you truly want to look your best, go low (or lower) carb for a few days before your target appearance, and abstain from alcohol or stick to less, with no mixers or just soda water and lime. Diet soda and artificial sweeteners are also bad for the complexion.

These small changes will reduce the water weight you’re carrying and give a more streamlined silhouette, in addition to providing other lifestyle benefits.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating sloughs away dead surface cells, which dim the appearance of skin and get in the way of makeup laying well on the surface. I recommend exfoliating a couple of times per week, especially before doing face masks so the benefits can penetrate more deeply.

Over-exfoliating will cause redness and irritation, so don’t do it so often that you get diminished returns. The amount you can do it and for how long depends on the gentleness or severity of the product you’re using.

I’ve tried many over the counter exfoliators and have developed my own formula, which is completely natural and works better (for me) than anything else I’ve tried. It is the Saltwater Pearl Exfoliating Polish, and since it was ritually constructed, has metaphysical properties that go beyond mundane formulations.

Face Masks 

The right face mask can take your skin a solid couple points above how it would look normally.

There are lots of masks on the market for different purposes, but I’ve never found one that works better for general beautification than honey boosted with essential oils and other natural ingredients.

They help the skin come into homeostasis, balancing oil and moisture, drawing out impurities so they aren’t resting under the surface and damaging tone, and overall result in a smooth look and feel.

I recently whipped up a batch during a great Venus in Libra election, and some is still currently available.

Mundane Primer + Makeup Recommendations

Primers help blur pores and keep your makeup resting well over time. I’m far from a makeup guru so I can’t make a whole lot of recommendations, but POREfessional by Benefit cosmetics has always done right by me.

Choosing the right makeup is important — it needs to match your tone, and it needs to be applied and blended well.

I like to use Makeup Forever Ultra HD foundation on the high(er) end, and Revlon ColorStay on the pharmaceutical circuit. I really ♡ Fenty Beauty as a brand. It provides some of the best options for people with deep and varied skin tones, so check them out if my vampiric pallor links aren’t doing you justice.

For application, you can pry a Beauty Blender from the cold, dead, makeup applying hand.

Highlighters and contouring is important for an overall look, but you want to strike a balance between seeming overly architected/ blinding and looking striking and ethereal.

Powders and blotting sheets are a must for setting and wear, if you’re inclined to oiliness. The Fenty blotting powder is the best I’ve ever come across.

Marrying the Mundane + Magical

Tools and products for beautification are sacred to Venus, and can be treated as such to boost their efficacy.

For instance, you can keep your makeup kit and face masks on your Venus altar, along with your jewelry, or keep your Venus altar where you apply your makeup.

When you make offerings to Venus, you can pray for her assistance in your casting of glamours, and for people to perceive you as beautiful and alluring. If you launch a sigil shoal to glamorous ends, tape the sigils to your bathroom mirror or vanity.

Do your face masks during times when Venus is particularly empowered, on her days or in her hours. Schedule hair cuts and other beauty treatments along those lines, or during other favorable alignments.

There are endless ways of weaving mundane actions and magical significance together in daily life, making for better results and a more charmed, meaningful everyday experience.

This is as true for glamour as it is anything else.

When I launched Sphere + Sundry, some of my vry srs occult friends asked, pearls clutched dearly, how I could bring myself to market on Instagram? Others wondered why I’ve been so transparent with my creation process.

The answer is — “witch kits” being sold at Sephora.

Or in September 2022, the fake-take on talismanic remediation hitting the mainstream:

A lot of “us” are having feelings about this development, but market forces have been trending in this direction for a while now. Since time immemorial, arguably!

Last Neptune was in Pisces oversaw the Spiritualist movement, where every Becky, Jane, and Susan were holding parlor séances. And it’s not so different now.

So… should mega corporations and exploitative charlatans be the primary beneficiaries of the public’s mounting interest in magic, astrology, and esotericism?

Clearly not.

Those of us who are offering astrological, magical, divinatory and/or healing books, media, and services — and who are doing the utmost to help their clients and change what parts of the world they are able — are uniquely poised to ride this wave *and* help elevate the standards, authenticity, and efficacy of what is offered to a ready-and-willing public.

The reason I’m transparent about what goes into the creation of actual materia magica is to show a teenage girl who comes home from Sephora with a newfound “witch kit” how magic can be (and is!) so much more than a hunk of rose quartz, artificial fragrance, and a questionably sourced sage bundle.

and remember — everyone starts somewhere!

Many good practitioners will be born from this trend, and others will never pick up a sage bundle again.

The point is, *YOU* deserve their money.

Not Sephora.

Do good work and market it well. Make this late capitalist hellscape *your* bitch, on *your* terms. Let the #witchesofinstagram light the way!

and by light, I mean LITERALLY pay your utility bill.

Your magic is your own, and the term “witch” doesn’t mean anything. It never has. And we all know that buying a “witch kit” does not a witcheth make. So don’t let it bug you more than it motivates you.

Keep your eye on the prize.

Offer real magic and real wisdom for real money.

The public is salivating for it (…and it just might help save our planet).

AND, I for one would way rather live in a world where interest in magic is rising and the tide of soulless materialism is going out.

This project is a collaboration between Sphere + Sundry and iconic astrologer Michael Lutin, who immortalized the transition of Regulus into Virgo with a performance and the handing out of Regulus in Virgo chips at the United Astrology Conference in 2012, pictured atop the talismanic Regulus plaque in the image above. When the Sun enters Virgo, it now conjoins the fixed star Regulus, as it does once annually, on Wednesday the 23rd, 2023. This is a wonderful opportunity to get on our tippy toes and take a look at the higher meaning of our lives, and embody channels of Real Light and authenticity. It reminds us to awaken to our higher potentials, and suggests we make the effort to raise the level at which we manifest our own individual Stellar Energies.

Regulus, also called Alpha Leonis, is the “Heart of the Lion” — a first magnitude star so far away that the light we currently receive from it was sent to Earth more than 70-years ago, and it shines at exactly 360 times the luminosity of our own Sun. These facts clarify its meta relationship to Solar principles and power to shine light on the process of re-integration between Self and Spirit.

The passage of that star in 2012 from 29° of Tropical Leo to 0° of Virgo represents the opportunity for a significant paradigm shift in the consciousness of beings down here on our planet. One way of seeing it is the passing of power from the “divine right of kings” and patriarchal structures that have dominated the last 2,000 years the star has resided in Leo, to the democratization of power and the “ascension of the common woman”, and all individuals, really, in Virgo. 

We are in a transition phase as the light we currently receive was emanating from the star’s location in Leo, and the Virgoan cast has not arrived on our planet yet. It will be fully manifest in the year 2082, which may give us some indications regarding how long various social justice movements may take to fully imbue our global systems.

On August 23rd, the time where Regulus is transmitting its message to the heart of Humanity’s own Star, we invite you to join us in ritually inviting the empowering, healing rays of Regulus into our World. 

We do this with a commitment to the stewardship of our planet and our return to the purity of true Nature, and the order emanating therefrom. We also do it as an invocation of our individual spirits and nature, in order to become more fully self-possessed, as a step toward reclaiming our own Divinity.

This is a moment where we can get in touch with our higher selves and our commitment to be the best we can be, both at the point we occupy on our individual timelines and the courses we are destined to carve through this incarnation.

There are three primary times when it would be most appropriate to perform this ritual.

  • The Sun’s entrance into Virgo (the least desirable option in locations where it’s dark out)
  • Any hour of the Sun on the 23rd (immediately following Sunrise would be ideal)
  • When the Sun and Regulus are conjoined the MC, the highest angle in the chart, which would be location specific. 

Let it be said that you do NOT have to go through the full dog and pony show and go all out on an altar and with saying these lengthy prayers. If you want to do something more streamlined, even just a simple meditation where you draw down the solar rays, that is a great way to attune to this energy and is always better than doing nothing!

Should you choose, you can create a dedicated Solar altar or use one you already maintain. The ideal location for any Solar or Regulus altar is facing East, where the Sun rises each day. If you perform this ritual outdoors basking in the Sun’s light, all the better. A sample altar might contain:

  • A yellow or gold altar cloth or piece of paper
  • One white or yellow candle (to represent the singularity of Solar fire), or six tealights (the Sun’s planetary magic number being 6)
  • A piece of gold
  • A red ruby or garnet
  • Fresh cut yellow flowers, such as yellow trumpets or sunflower
  • The solar glyph, Agrippa’s solar sigils, and/ or the magic square of the Sun
  • Images or icons of hearts or lions
  • Frankincense and an incense or resin burner, or another solar incense blend
  • Magical solar or Regulus materials, such as oils and talismans.

At your chosen time, fire up the candle and incense, and anoint yourself with Regulus oil if you have some to begin the ritual.

Draw the glyph of Regulus, preferably using yellow or gold ink, which can be anointed too. You can also use your finger to trace the glyph of Regulus facing the Sun or East if it is right overhead. I will be putting a dot in the circle portion of the Regulus glyph, as a hybridized sigil between the Sun’s glyph and that of Regulus.

We will open with the orphic hymn to Astron, modified to address Regulus, followed by the Hymn to Helios, before proceeding in our own words.

With holy voice I call Regulus on high, pure sacred light and genii of the sky.
Celestial star, the progeny of Night, in whirling circles beaming far your light,
Refulgent rays around the heav’ns ye throw, eternal fires, the source of all below.
With flames significant of Fate ye shine, and aptly rule for men a path divine.
In seven bright zones ye run with wand’ring flames,
and heaven and earth compose your lucid frames:
With course unwearied, pure and fiery bright forever shining thro’ the veil of Night.

Show me how to fully embody my best self, and light the way forward on my path, and the paths of all other creatures. Help us to see and perceive ourselves and all else clearly and truly.

Empower me as a sacred vessel of your light, devoted to faith, service, and the responsibilities I have to myself, others, and the natural order. Resurrect hope and faith in all of humanity, and connect us to our inner and collective sources of divinity.

Regulus awes me.

The creation of the Regulus series was the first time I’ve ever worked with that star in particular.

Being “goth on the inside” with a 12th house fallen Sun, I never understood Solar appeal. Austin and I spent most of our adult lives working + sleeping in rooms with black blankets stapled to the windows to shield us from the Sun’s obtrusive and insistent rays. I’d openly hiss to address them when I stepped out the door as my eyes would violently adjust.

We were the smart, scary loner kids with bad attitudes that our peers didn’t know how to relate to or what to do with — I’m sure *many* of our adult friends came from similar socially formative experiences.

All the old astrological material talks about how unfortunate the 12th house is in particular — how it’s the darkest of the dark houses and only brings misfortune and loss, taking ownership of occult topics and void or liminal spaces, which, admittedly, most people don’t have much use for.

Traditional astrology is super hot (especially with the youngins) and I’ve been heavily influenced by that material, but still don’t feel the need to label myself or identify as a ‘trad’ astrologer.

I find the trend of overly identifying with labels or particular systems, when so many of our prescribed models are outmoded, and there are infinite ways of Being in a state of perpetual becoming and disintegration, is — in a word — limiting.

It’s heading down an important road, but in the wrong direction.

Nothing is True.
Everything is permitted.

The point is to transcend categories, not to fuel the infinite fracturing and derision of our time. Everyone taking up arms against that which chafes their rigid ideologies, rather than become polished (as a rock tumbles) in order to create and *experience* less friction and suffering. We see it and hate it in everyone else, as we allow the same virus to proliferate in ourselves.

What you call yourself is a tool. What They call you is a distraction.

Neither come close to describing who and what you are. A God in mid-process of reclaiming their own divinity.

We are whole and perfect on the inside. Our crusty exteriors — composed of thoughts, biological values, social expectations, and cultural conditioning — divides us from our own light. Those on the Path sense its warmth, and Work to liberate it from the dungeon of incarnation.

We’re all so upset that these seem like end times, but there have been end times before. The Earth will live on, and so will our souls, no matter the horrors or pain we suffer this time around. It is still the RIGHT thing to mitigate suffering to the extent it is in our power, and do our part to create a better world.

But don’t lose the forest for the trees.

It doesn’t matter what hill you die on, you’ll be born again shortly enough. And there will always be another hill just over the horizon — until your own light shines so brightly that it blots out all else. You are too busy Being to Do, or to categorize.

The old astrologers hated the 12th house because the human world had no place for occult wisdom. It meant loss and failure because other people punished occultists with alienation, torture, and death. It was the people who made it so.

Froo-froo newage has no appeal to me, but they have some good tech. The 12th house doesn’t *only* mean what it used to, because things change.

We’re living in a time where I can wake up on a Wednesday, post a status like this openly on the internet, and have the *luxury* of not being burned at the stake. Lots of our friends are making their way in the world doing things that would *never* have been allowed before.

THAT is a glorious thing.

If you’re a weirdo who is doing your own thing, there has never been a better time to be alive.

Weirdos at large are fantastically monetized, now. Or have the capacity to be. We have many of the same tools at our disposal that only the controlling interests and “means of production” had access to for hundreds of years. We have better roadmaps to navigate these shifting tides of late capitalism, and provide for ourselves in ways the broken system can’t, than normies do.

That is unprecedented. That is the liberation of True light from the darkness of artificial light — mass market overheads designed to keep us disempowered, controlled, and confused, in our respective shitty little cells of incarnation.

The same false light we were trying so desperately to keep out with stapled window blankets. The false light giving real light a bad name.

But along our paths, we’ve found our way. We’ve gone from being outcast kids to successful, and some might even say “popular” (which 13 year old Kaitlin would have found insane), adult humans who can be seen for who we are and appreciated for the weird ass work we do in the world.

Adjusting to that has been strange. We never had the audacity to expect such a thing would be possible.

But it is. And for you, too.
On your own path, and in your own way.

Much of this has been said in some form or another by occultists before me, and will be echoed in perpetuity because the Truth never ceases to be.

But it is one thing to be Told something. It is another to Know it. To have the truth of it shine through you, and feel it because it exists in the core of your divinity, as you’re in the process of emanating.

Working with Regulus has helped guide me toward my version of true light, 12th house as it is. All of the world is a wasting voidscape now, anyway, but that is where stars are born.

Austin Coppock was contemplating writing a piece years ago about which stimulants belonged to which zodiac signs. He ascribed green tea to Libra, and it was so perfect.

Caffeine is the go-to drug of choice for getting the engines revving, bringing the brain online, and activating the word machine — in the morning or in general, for millions of people.

Caffeine pairs well with Libra being Cardinal, the mode of signs with an initiatory and activating go-getting quality, and an air sign, the element of intellectually oriented, communicative signs.

Tea has less caffeine than coffee and produces a softer buzz. Green tea is even more moderate than standard black tea, and has beautifying and healing properties, being full of antioxidants. It is associated with the maintenance of youth and is often used as an extract in beauty products.

Green tea is also a more refined, attractive, and high brow selection than standard black, remaining true to Venus’ good taste and aesthetic sensibilities. It is by far the prettiest common tea (though admittedly murky brown liquids aren’t hard to beat for style).

Some of the more elaborate Japanese tea rituals involve the preparation of matcha, a powdered green tea that is hand whipped to a froth and intended to be savored and appreciated slowly.

Green is one of the colors associated with Venus, as the patina on her metal, copper, turns green over time. It also represents Venus’ relationship to earthly pleasures and lushness, being the color of chlorophyll, the agent primarily responsible for the green hues of the vegetal sphere.

Emerald is frequently correlated with Venus in the Western tradition, and is known as the primary birth stone for Taurus, the earth sign Venus rules.

Venus is also associated with white, brilliance, and sparkle, making for the Vedic tradition’s association with diamond. Both are highly coveted and beautiful precious stones; the diamond notably being the most dominant Western selection for wedding rings.

[I am aware of the horrors of the diamond trade and the marketing tactics and false scarcity behind the diamond engagement ring trend, but it bears mention that Venus is the planet of love, partnership, and romance, and diamond is an exquisite exemplar of her qualities.]

Which brings us to another beverage — this one related to weddings, anniversaries, and celebrations — champagne! Venus has strong associations with bubbles, because they bring joy, pleasure, and excitement, and are frequently used to mark happy occasions.

They are a literal representation of effervescence, which is a Venusian feature, and are often paired with sugar (ruled by Venus), as in soda, or used in alcoholic beverages, which reduce social inhibitions and can stir the libidinal instincts. For those reasons, Venus is associated with champagne, mineral water, and bubbly drinks of all variety. They, along with cold green tea sweetened with honey, make great Venus offerings.

Returning to color — clear or white Venus is more allied with Libra than Taurus, by nature of it being an air sign, which tends to prefer a minimalist, straight, and clean aesthetic. You can observe this in the way people with strong Libra style themselves compared to those with strong Taurus.

Libra tends to prefer looks that are are classic, put together, and elegant, but can be stylistically safe and lacking in color or preferring pastel, whereas Taurus gravitates toward accessorizing, is more likely to explore trends, and tends toward a girlier, busier, “cuter” and highly coiffed aesthetic.

Someone recently asked on Instagram why I hadn’t mentioned pink as a color associated with Venus. All pastels are ruled by Venus because they are a byproduct of being mixed with white, which is a primary Venus color.

Pastels signify Venus’ ability to mix compatibly with all things and is an illustration of her moderating and cooling influence. Pink is the byproduct of Venus tempering red, the color of Mars, but she could also brighten up black, essentially remediating Saturn. #magicalcolortheory

Copper is easily one of the most reactive metals to the touch (short of liquid Mercury, which also makes sense). It will almost instantly react to the oils on your skin and begin to change color and even texture, ultimately resulting in a green patina.

It also has a purifying and energizing effect on water it comes into contact with, another element allied with Venus do to her moist and cooling nature.

The metal of Venus, being the planet of love, sex, and connection, should be reactive to the touch and highly conductive, which copper is. That’s why copper is used in wire, and, interestingly enough because it matches so many Venus myths, it’s fitting that people steal and “strip” copper wire to absorb its value for themselves.

Venus figures, in lore and (unfortunately) in life, are the most frequently kidnapped or traded genre, because people desire their beauty and want to selfishly possess their value. This leads us down the rabbit hole of consent, autonomy, and all that very important stuff, but it isn’t the primary topic of this piece, so we’ll bypass that…

The reason I’m detailing all of the logic behind these associations is to show how deeply rational they are.

It’s easy to look at old correspondence tables and not consider the reasons for why significations align, and how they mirror one another. OR look at newfangled correspondence tables and not be able to tell if someone got it wrong!

This dynamic is part of why you can never be too good at the fundamentals, especially in astrology and magic. All else flows from there, and if your basics are broken, not too much good can follow. It’ll deprive you of the ability to draw your own conclusions, and your results will suffer.

If you understand the logic behind associations, you can create your own, and that imbues your own work and your own magic with freshness and originality. It is the layering of association and harmony between elements that creates a delineation or result that is cohesive, accurate, and potent.

Make a practice of auditing the underlying logic in all things. Try to understand the mechanics that make it work, and in the meantime (or if you don’t have the energy, time, or desire to), get your advice and your magic from people who seem like they do.

Sometimes it’s better to hire a specialist than to do something yourself, but discernment and dedication to “doing it right” are key, on behalf of yourself and whoever you use as a consultant or a practitioner.

Bonus point on Venus and her related numbers —

The number 7 is associated with Venus because that’s the amount of time it takes her to go through her full phase of retrogrades through the zodiac, also called her synodic cycle.

Her lesser association is the number 5 because she first traces a pentacle in the zodiac as she performs her retrograde pattern, and is related to the pentagram and the harmony of the five element theory. Five is the primary number of Mars in planetary magic, who is Venus’ archetypal mate, and paired partner as the lesser benefic and malefic respectively.

What do both 7 and 5 have in common? They’re odd numbers.

Sets of things presented in odd numbers makes them visually more attractive, as a fundamental design principle, and odd numbers have a tendency to be related to yin principles. Odd numbers, counterintuitively, create more visual balance than even numbers do — and if Venus knows anything, it’s her angles.

Venus rituals, or even just timing your self-care and social plans in accord with Venusian tides, are wonderful ways to use astrology and ritual to enhance routine life.

There are many fires to put out and dragons to be slayed, in the world at large and in our own spheres, and applying the fine art of #diplomancy is often the most winsome approach. Venus can help, massaging her cool harmony into hot tempers and enflamed circumstances.

Fridays, Monday nights after sunset, and the hour of Venus are prime times, especially when Venus is well dignified or the Moon is in one of her signs, either Taurus or Libra.

If you would like to magnify the effects of Venus, making offerings and prayers at the appropriate times is favored.

If you already have a Venus altar, clean it. If you don’t have one, during this time is a great chance to create one! An example Venus altar could have —

  • A green or white cloth (paper in a pinch!)
  • One or seven (the number of Venus) white or green candles
  • Seven pennies or a piece of copper (the metal Venus rules)
  • The glyph/ symbol of Venus
  • The planetary square of Venus
  • Agrippa’s seals and symbols of Venus
  • A mirror
  • Diamonds, emeralds, green jade, or rose quartz
  • Incense, perfume, floral essential oils, or flower essences
  • A green pen that you use for writing Venus related sigils or spells
  • A space for offerings. These could be fresh flowers, some honey, wine or a sweet, cool beverage, fresh fruit or juice, or something sugary. I would also advise fresh water, from a natural source is always better if you can get it, but a good magician works with what they have!

The Agrippan symbols, planetary square, and hebrew table for Venus are all at the bottom of this post. You don’t have to use them all or even understand them for them to work. You can draw them by hand or print the image off the website.

Keep in mind that sometimes ritual advice can be a little extra. You don’t HAVE to pull out all the stops. Basic workings are also effective, but often your return is in proportion to the effort you put in. That fact is as true in magic as it is everything else. Applying yourself will always render better results, and the effort expounded on a planet’s behalf becomes an aspect of your offering to it.

Treat getting ready for a Venus ritual like you’re going on a hot date. This aspect can feel theatrical, which can be fun or silly, depending on your nature, but the planets appreciate and reward the effort you put in to appeal to their own preferences, and it helps you vibe with their wavelength.

Venus likes people in a clean and attractive state. Be washed and groomed. Wear clean, attractive clothes (extra credit if they are green or white!). Don a matching lingerie set, a full face of makeup, and your finest jewelry. Or don’t! Just an option.

Light your candles and incense, if you’re using it. Take a moment to visualize the planet Venus and channel her energy into your body. Meditate on her symbols or draw them fresh.

Once you feel attuned, say the Orphic Hymn to Aphrodite. The Hymn follows, addressing Venus directly —

Heav’nly Venus, illustrious, laughter-loving queen, sea-born, night-loving, of an awesome mien;
Crafty, from whom necessity first came, producing, nightly, all-connecting dame:
‘Tis thine the world with harmony to join, for all things spring from thee, O pow’r divine.
The triple Fates are rul’d by thy decree, and all productions yield alike to thee:
Whate’er the heav’ns, encircling all contain, earth fruit-producing, and the stormy main, 
Thy sway confesses, and obeys thy nod, awesome attendant of the brumal God:
Goddess of marriage, charming to the sight, mother of Loves, whom banquetings delight;
Source of persuasion, secret, fav’ring queen, illustrious born, apparent and unseen:
Spousal, lupercal, and to men inclin’d, prolific, most-desir’d, life-giving., kind:
Great sceptre-bearer of the Gods, ’tis thine, mortals in necessary bands to join; 
And ev’ry tribe of savage monsters dire in magic chains to bind, thro’ mad desire.

Or if in Cyprus with thy mother fair, where married females praise thee ev’ry year,
And beauteous virgins in the chorus join, Adonis pure to sing and thee divine;
Come, all-attractive to my pray’r inclin’d, for thee, I call, with holy, reverent mind.

Afterward, present your offerings and thank Venus for what blessings she has already given you, and ask that she continue to provide them. An example script might be —

Lovely Venus! I am presenting to you these offerings of honey, water, flowers, incense, and wine, and thank you for all the beauty and harmony you have brought to my sphere. I pray that you bring a cooling, and moderating influence into the world and my life. Bring healing and harmony to my relationships, and sweeten the words that I speak, and those that are spoken to and about me… (you can make further specific requests, as desired). Please accept these offerings as treasured gifts, and heartfelt thanks to you, Venus, who is Most Beautiful! Amen.

You can wrap up the ritual and move on, or literally use this as an opportunity to go on a hot date!

Q+A: Why do you call your wares “offerings”?

A few people have asked — why do you refer to your products as offerings? Beyond sugar-coating “marketing” speech, there are two reasons.

The first is that all of our wares are created by means of a ritual process. Everything we make is a literal offering to the powers that they serve — to help further their objectives in the world. This incense belongs to Mars. This water is holy to Asclepius. This candle, when lit, burns with the starfire of Regulus itself. Each and every item is an earthly missionary, spreading the charge of its patron celestial power. A battery of devotion.

The second is more nebulous, having to do with the spirit in which we offer our wares to the public. It is an honor and a pleasure to be able to do this work, and to have it be accepted and procured by our clients is mind blowing.

We are an intermediary channel — Priests and Priestesses tending to the powers we serve. In spiritual terms, those are the aforementioned celestial powers providing the magical charge for our wares, but in human terms, that is every single person who ever has, or ever will, place an order.

You supporting our work is also a way of feeding the Gods, spirits, and powers associated with each series. All the coin spent on such offerings is an actual offering in a classically religious sense. The transaction itself is in return for more than a physical product — it is a portion of sacrifice for the magic. In exchange you receive a holy relic, blessed and charged by the powers imbuing.

You too are a divine power. As the infamous Mr. Crowley once said, “every man and every woman is a star”. Each client is a star, whom we also serve with heartfelt devotion. It’s why we put so much care into our instructions, packaging, shipping, customer support, and things that we post. The aim is to aid and empower our clients to the highest of our ability, and we wish them every success and triumph. This is carried through in our personal devotions, where we always petition for our clients’ protection, empowerment, and financial security.

Why?

Because a rising tide raises all boats. We are a community, and we’re all surfing the same rough waters, trying to avoid the same sharks. It is our duty to care for one another, and to make the world a better place in the ways which we are able.

Sphere + Sundry is the way we’ve found, and we will continue striving to provide the best offerings possible to all manner of planets and stars, whether they be of fire or flesh.
