Welcome to the write-up for the Third Decan of Capricorn, which Austin was inspired to pen the core of.

In the third decan of Capricorn lies a big, solid desk. Upon it a great book lies open, full of facts, figures, and statistics. Beside it is a chunky signet ring, with a coat of arms emblazoned on it. A chessboard, with a game half-played, is pushed to the corner.

Behind the desk is a stern and sturdy chair. Some might call it a throne. Its feet merge with the floor and become roots, and on its high, carved back perch a pair of ravens.

To sit that throne, you’ll need to master the great Mercurial Arts of Understanding, Deciding, and Commanding.

The book and the ravens are there for understanding. The book is the great Record of what transpires in your world. The Ravens are there to inform you of ongoing matters.

The big signet ring is for issuing decrees. That’s your coat of arms cut into it, the motto that guides you there in the stone. With it you put your full authority into your decisions.

Gazing at the chess board, you notice that the King has your features. 

You reach out, touch it, and your vision shifts to the piece’s perspective of the tactical grid. You are the King, but you are also the other pieces. They are your hands and feet. They are your fingers. You just never learned to wiggle them. You are the King piece on the board, but you are also your own finger tip resting uncertainly upon it.

These are forces within your world that you did not know you could command. They can be set in motion, they can be stopped. Their action and inaction is not something you must merely endure.

Together, these arts of throne, signet, and record bring prosperity, sovereignty, and order to any space in which they are practiced.  The moment chosen for the ideal embodiment of these thrice-great arts is as follows:

THE ELECTION

Mercury, the key that opens wide the third decan of Capricorn, is in the Ascending degree during its own hour, granting access to the mysteries of authority, understanding, and decree. Mercury is in a bright morning rising and fortified by a team of capable planets.

Most potent of these supporting ministers is Mars, who is exalted, at home in a night chart, and also in its own decan. As Capricorn III is the decan which hosts Mars’ degree of maximum exaltation, the red planet’s influence is both relevant and well received.  Mars strengthens the command and control function of the decan, it’s fire focused enough to cut sigil into stone.

Offsetting the potentially unnecessary harshness of Mars is Venus. Also placed in the First house, Venus balances the red planet’s heat with equivalent coolness.

The ruler of the First is Saturn, located in Pisces in a particularly fortunate situation. Saturn, in its own decan, is conjoined the royal star Fomalhaut, and tightly aspected by both benefics.

The Moon is in Virgo, and in the middle of the third quarter, still rich with light. The Moon’s placement in a Mercury-ruled sign and in a tight trine with the morning-rising messenger put Luna in excellent position to manifest and support the works at hand.

Additionally, there is a tight Grand Earth Trine between Mercury, Uranus, and the Moon. This configuration places Mercury at the focal point of the Moon’s manifest power and Uranus’ innovative charge. 

Finally, it may be of interest to astro-nerds to note that both Spirit and Fortune in this chart are ruled by Mercury, giving the planet-in-decan just that much more influence.

QUALITIES, APPLICATIONS, AND COMBINATIONS

Though a great aid for accomplishment, this series does not impel action. Instead, it sits us down to think, to remember our seat of power and to contemplate, plan, and then set into motion. The motion arises from considered judgment that is effective, complete, and coherent.

Capricorn III is quite different from other Mercury-based series [Gemini and Virgo] in this respect. While they are active, mobile, dexterous, and chatty, Capricorn III is rooted, contemplative, and authoritative.

The energetic quality is quite balanced, with neither hot, cold, wet, or dry present to an excessive degree. There is solidity, but without a sense of physical heaviness [editor’s note: debatable!].  There is weight, but it is mental— the pull of psychic gravity on important matters and consequential decisions.     

Capricorn III’s potency is excellent for the entire sphere of life management, as well as financial planning, running a business, and the cultivation of prosperity.

Work with this series will also increase respect for the authority of one’s speech.

Capricorn III can be directed outward to obtain the good will of people in positions of authority, and to gain favorable rulings and decrees from those throne-sitters [including in legal matters].

In addition to the internal revelations of sovereignty which this series stokes, it is also perfectly suited to work done to obtain a fitting position. Those seeking promotion or on the hunt for the right job both stand to benefit.

Capricorn III has an excellent synergy with other existing series.

The most natural pairing is with Mercury in Virgo. Cap III centers and grounds the abundant mental energy it has to offer, while throne-work benefits from a high-voltage power supply.

Another easy pairing is with Capricorn II, which supplements Capricorn III’s authority, certainty, and deep strategy with the active, structured industry of the second face.
